Precisely selecting shapes

your question raises one in my mind, specifically when you said "forming a
plus sign" are they really two shapes or have they been grouped to form a
single shape. As an experiment can you zoom in to the lines and then select
one line by pointing at it's apex?

How do I control how precisely Visio selects shapes. An example would be
two
lines perpendicular, forming a plus sign. Pointing at one of them and
clicking highlights the other one - the one that is on the upper layer.
How
can I force Visio to only select the one that I am specifically pointing
at?

When multiple shapes overlap a region, you can click in the same place again
to cycle through the stack of shapes.

The plus sign was just used as an example that there was one line running
vertically and one running horizontally. They are independent and not
grouped. clicking near the apex of the horizontal one, far away from the
vertical one, selects the vertical, which happens to be on the "top" layer.
How can I adjust this extreme lack of precision when selecting objects.
Sure, multiple clicking would eventually select the horizontal, but that is
not always an acceptable solution. Say you want to select another object and
this vertical line together to perform an action; alignment, grouping,
arrangement, etc. In this case, you would select the first object, and then
the vertical line by depressing CTRL and then selecting the vertical line.
This is an example where the precision would matter, that ONLY the object
directly under the cursor would be selected when clicking.
