when opens a viso doc and do a save as, it defults to V5. there is no option
for V2000. when clicks on the save icon in the tool bar it give the option
to save in a 2000 format. when opening it states that viso is in an earlier
format. how can this be stopped.

sounds like you are opening a v5 document in v2000, so what you are
describing is probably normal operation.

if you do a save as v2000 and then reopen it (the assumption is you are at
least at v2000) does it still complain about the level ?

Have you checked the Tools/Options/Save tab to see if it is set to save as
Visio 5? You can set that so it won't always save to Visio 5.
