Visio hangs once a template is chosen

Hi. I have Visio 2007. I am able to work with Visio docs as embedded
objects only. If I open Visio 2007, I am shown the templates that are
standard. If I choose one, the whole application hangs. If I don't choose a
template and instead choose something else like to manage Add-Ins, I am able
to do so. I also can't open up VSD files anyone sends me. Many people at my
office have this same issue.

Thanks!

Before you open a template have a look at menu
Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> File Paths

What are all the file paths set to, especially the Addons and Startup paths?

The Addons and Startup certainly shouldn't be set to this, clear these two entries.

Tried this just now. Didn't work. Even if I clear all of them, it doesn't
change things.

Ok, try menu Tools -> Trust Center -> addIns
and look at what is loaded. Anything interesting?

I've ticked the box "Require Application Add-ins to be signed by Trusted
Publisher", so actually none appear in the active list.

Ok, can you open a blank diagram (not one of the templates), just a File -> New?
Can you open a stencil by itself? (menu File -> Shapes)

I feel you've got some addon that has grabbed the open document event handler.

All these things result in the application hanging. I've even disabled all
add-ins just now and reloaded the application--still the same issue.

Has it always done this or is it a new install?
Have you tried re-installing?

Other than that I'm all out of ideas. I don't think this group is officially monitored any
more. Ask on Visio Guy's forum at http://www.visguy.com/vgforum/
(yes, I'm there as well !)

On this machine, it's always done this. Lots of my co-workers have the same
issue. I tried removing it entirely and re-installing. Didn't help. Thanks
for all the suggestions!
