Discussion:
Error - Failed to initialize the modeling engine

I get this error no matter what PC I have Visio installed on, I have both
the Visio 2003 Professional version and Visio 2003 for Enterprise Architects
(on those mac hines where I have VS2005 installed).

I have it installed on 3 PCs at home and 2 at work and I get the same error
every time when I try to either open up a Database Visio Diagram or create a
new one. Is there a windows update that screws up Visio that I can
uninstall? I haven't done any product updates to Visio itself because after
reading through various groups it seems the updates cause more problems than
solve them. I am to the point of just reinstalling windows, then sp2 and
then office 2003 and not installing any other updates beyond that.

Are there any workarounds so I don't have to do this?

This problem has suddenly occured in the last two weeks and I can only
attribute to some kind of conflict with one of Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, meant to say "some kind of conflict with one of the recent windows

I found the following Visio update breaks the Modeling Engine: KB947650

Made sure I had "show updates" checked off in add/remove programs and was
able to uninstall it, now everything works.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to pin down the problem and
uninstall the update.

We have had other reports of this problem as well, and the patching group
is working on a replacement update.

By the way - our testing so far shows that the problem is occurring when
installing the MS08-019 update on Visio 2003 SP2. If you then update to
SP3, you should be okay. Similarly, if you have SP3 and apply the security
update, the problem doesn't occur as well. It seems to only happen with
Visio 2003 SP2 and the security update.

Thanks for the info - I was incorrect in stating that it would not occur
with SP3 and the MS08-019 update. For users with SP2 and the security
update, applying SP3 seem to work okay. But when you have SP3 already and
apply the Security update, the problem occurs.

FYI - A fix has been released which will resolve this issue and allow you
to work with the DB Modeling solution after the installation of the
security update in MS08-019.

The new hotfix ID is 958641, and it is available now, but must be requested
through (no-charge) support. You can review the options for making contact
with the support organization on the website here :
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support

The article for the fix is : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958641
This update is basedline on Visio 2003 SP3, and unless that SP level is
installed, the update will not install.
The article is being updated, and currently doesn't list the db modeling
issue among the issues fixed.

For a large corporation I have been asked to package this hotfix to deploy to
machines with Visio SP2.

The problem we face is that we cannot upgrade to Visio SP3 (no resource /
budget / project) or remove the security hotfix.

This new hotfix hotfix does install on SP2 and does in fact get rid of the
error message in Visio. However we cannot be sure it does not break anything
else.

Will Microsoft be doing anything to fix this for SP2 users? and or offer any
guidance other than to just upgrade or remove the KB947650 fix ?

FYI - A fix has been released which will resolve this issue and allow you
to work with the DB Modeling solution after the installation of the
security update in MS08-019.
The new hotfix ID is 958641, and it is available now, but must be requested
through (no-charge) support. You can review the options for making contact
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support
The article for the fix is : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958641
This update is basedline on Visio 2003 SP3, and unless that SP level is
installed, the update will not install.
The article is being updated, and currently doesn't list the db modeling
issue among the issues fixed.

Checking again on the article, I may have been wrong about the baseline. I
will check and let you know.

As I noted, the article is not updated for both issues fixed yet, either.
